Remote Administration Tools
PsTools - A suite of tools from Microsoft that allows you to gather remote system information, execute programs remotely, change passwords remotely, and more. This tool is a must for system administrators. Requires Windows XP or higher.
PuTTY - An open source SSH and telnet client for Windows.
VNC - A remote administration utility that you install on remote machines to allow you to access, view, and control the remote machine. This comes in really handy as a support tool or for doing remote installs.

Database Servers
MySQL Server - A free open source database with many of the same features as the paid version of SQL server. It is an excellent, scalable choice for many applications that use a back-end database to store information. Also available is a free GUI interface to assist in building and maintaining your MySQL databases.
SQL Server Express or MSDE - A database system provided by Microsoft that is essentially a scaled back version of Microsoft’s SQL Server platform. This is an excellent choice for those already familiar with SQL Server and do not need to server very many users of the database. This database utility also includes a free GUI interface to assist in building and maintaining your SQL Server Express databases.
Productivity Software
MultiMonitor Taskbar - A MUST for anyone who uses multiple monitors! This utility adds a taskbar to your second monitor, and the applications running on the second monitor appear in the second monitor’s taskbar when the applications are minimized. It really helps de-clutter the standard Windows taskbar and keeps things organized.
OpenOffice - An open source alternative to Microsoft’s Office productivity suite. This software gives you a word processing application, spreadsheet application, presentation application and more! You can even tweak settings to allow you to save the files you create in native Microsoft formats, allowing you to share your files with other Microsoft users.
Paint.NET - An open source alternative to the default Paint program that comes with Windows. Paint.NET is a very versatile and intuitive image editing program.
PDF Creator - Free Adobe PDF file creation software. This software allows you to easily create Adobe PDF files from many popular programs, such as Microsoft Word. It is very simple to use! If you have the knowledge to print to a printer, you can be on your way creating PDF files in no time at all.
